The GEO Audit Checklist: 10 Points to Assess Your AI Visibility

Most brands have no idea whether AI systems mention them. This checklist gives you a structured framework to assess your current position and identify the highest-leverage fixes.

A GEO audit is not a single tool or a one-click report. It's a structured review of how AI systems understand and represent your brand across the queries your buyers use. This 10-point checklist covers the full scope — from baseline measurement to content structure to external mentions.

Use this as a quarterly review process. The AI landscape shifts quickly: models update, competitors publish new content, and retrieval layers change. A brand well-represented in February may be absent in May if nothing was maintained.

The 10-Point GEO Audit Checklist

01

Baseline citation rate across core queries

Run your brand name through 10–20 queries your buyers actually use (not branded queries). Record how often your brand appears. Anything below 30% is a red flag. Above 70% means you're well-represented.

Tool needed: Citedly audit or manual ChatGPT/Perplexity testing
02

Competitor citation comparison

For each query where your brand wasn't cited, which competitors were? If the same 2–3 competitors consistently displace you, their content approach is worth analyzing in detail.

Deliverable: a competitor gap map showing who owns which queries
03

Content structure audit

Review your 10 highest-traffic pages. Do they lead with clear answers, use explicit headings, and make factual claims with specific numbers? Narrative-heavy content consistently underperforms structured content in AI citations.

Fix: Rewrite intros to answer the target question in the first sentence
04

FAQ coverage for key buyer questions

List the 20 most common questions your buyers ask at each stage of the funnel. How many have dedicated FAQ pages or sections with direct answers? AI citation is heavily driven by question-answer pattern matching.

Target: every core buyer question has a dedicated, structured answer page
05

FAQPage schema markup

Check whether your FAQ content includes structured data markup (FAQPage schema). This directly signals to AI crawlers that your content is Q&A formatted. Use Google's Rich Results Test to verify implementation.

Tool: Google Rich Results Test at search.google.com/test/rich-results
06

Third-party citation density

How many independent, authoritative sources mention your brand? Search your brand name on Google and filter to the past year. Count mentions in review platforms (G2, Capterra), industry publications, and community forums. Thin external presence = low AI citation probability.

Target: 3+ new authoritative external mentions per month
07

Category association consistency

Search your brand name and review the first 20 results. How is your brand described? Is the category language consistent, or do descriptions vary widely? Inconsistent category signals reduce the probability that AI systems correctly associate you with buyer queries.

Fix: Align your own content, G2/Capterra profile, and press materials on a consistent category description
08

Statistical and factual claims density

Review your key content pages for specific, verifiable claims (stats, percentages, named outcomes). The Princeton/Georgia Tech GEO research found that statistical claims were one of the highest-impact interventions for increasing LLM citation rates.

Fix: Add customer data, case study outcomes, and third-party statistics to core content pages
09

Perplexity and Bing AI visibility

Most GEO audits focus on ChatGPT, but Perplexity and Bing's Copilot use different retrieval stacks and may show different citation patterns. A brand visible in ChatGPT may be absent in Perplexity. Audit all major AI surfaces your buyers use.

Run the same query set across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini
10

Tracking cadence and baseline documentation

GEO optimization without measurement is guesswork. Document your current citation rates as a baseline before making any changes. Set a monthly re-audit schedule. Without before/after data, you can't attribute impact to specific content changes.

Deliverable: a spreadsheet or dashboard tracking citation rates per query per month

How to score your audit

After completing the checklist, tally how many items you can genuinely check off versus which require work:

8–10
Strong

You have solid GEO foundations. Focus on expanding query coverage and monitoring.

5–7
Developing

Good baseline but gaps exist. Prioritize checklist items 1–4 first.

0–4
Early stage

Significant gaps. Start with citation baseline (item 1) and FAQ content (item 4).

What to do next

If you've identified gaps in your checklist, prioritize in this order:

  1. 01Establish a citation baseline first (item 1) — you need data before making changes
  2. 02Fix content structure issues (items 3, 4, 5, 8) — these are fully within your control
  3. 03Build external mentions (item 6) — slower to impact but critical for long-term AI visibility
  4. 04Tighten category messaging (item 7) — often overlooked but highly leveraged
  5. 05Expand to multi-platform monitoring (item 9) — once your core platform is solid

GEO audit work compounds. Brands that run this checklist quarterly and act on the findings will, over 12–18 months, build a significant AI visibility advantage over competitors who haven't started. The window for early-mover advantage is still open — but it closes a little more with every month that passes.
